Reception and Czech translations Story of O, a novel by Pauline Réage

1 Abstract The thesis describes the reception and Czech translations of Story of O by Pauline Réage, an erotic novel which was considered scandalous in its time (1954) and became part of the canon of French contemporary prose. In the first part, the thesis characterizes the structure and style of Story of O. It then presents the specific context of its first publication and places the novel in the evolution of French literature. In this part, the thesis also attempts to describe the reception context in the fifties and compares the situation with how the novel is perceived by the current literary scene and cultural domain in general. In this part of the reception analysis, the thesis relies on critical reviews in French periodicals and reactions on the internet. It also mentions the perspective of literary theoreticians on similarly themed works. In the second part, the thesis introduces two Czech translations and attempts to recreate the reasons which led to the publication of the first translation Příběh O.: krásná z Roissy, Tabu, 1991 by Lucie Erbenová and the second translation Příběh O; Návrat do Roissy, Host, 2005 by Matěj Turek. The Czech translations of John Donne: a translator's poetics and its consequences

The PhD thesis studies the translations and the overall reception of John Donneʼs poetry in the Czech literary culture. Its introduction explains the choice of the topic, outlines the structure of the text and the main question to be answered: to what extent Donne has become a significant presence in the Czech cultural context and how his work has been transplanted through translations. The first chapter gives a brief overview of the historical changes in the appreciation of Donneʼs poetry and, drawing on a range of Donnean literature, attempts to define the main features of his poetics. The second chapter traces the gradual building of an awareness of Donneʼs poetry among Czech readers through translations, translation paratexts and references in the works of Czech literary scholars. It introduces the Czech translators of Donne and discusses their motives for translating his work where these could be ascertained. The first part of Chapter 3 describes the method used in analyzing the Czech translations. Maria Molchan Bohumil Hrabal v ruských překladech Богумил Грабал в русских переводах Bohumil Hrabal in Russian Translations Abstract The aim of this doctoral thesis is to analyze existing translations of Bohumil Hrabal's works into the Russian language, to create an adequate translation of Hrabal's novel Harlequin's Millions, to accompany it with an introspective commentary on the translation process, and to place it into the context of the current translational norm. The present work can be defined as an empirical-analytical study. The empirical part of the thesis consists of the first translation ever done of Harlequin's Millions into Russian preceded by a complex theoretical-analytical study. This study has a multilevel structure and includes translation criticism of Hrabal's works in Russian based on a special methodological framework, which was developed specifically for the purposes of our research. The study also covers the issue of translational norm, offers a review of secondary literature on Hrabal, and defines the author's role among other Czech writers on the Russian book market. Translation Studies in Slovo a Slovesnost afrter 1945

The purpose of this paper was to overview the appearance of translation themes in the Czech linguistic periodical Slovo a slovesnost (Language and Literature), from 1948 to 1989, and confront those themes with the social and cultural background of the epoch. Realization of this purpose required a meticulous selection of translation themed articles from all published articles in selected years in this periodical and their further examination. The review of social and cultural context is based on additional literature, primarily on translation theory and translation history, partially on general linguistics or history. As a result of this research, content and period importance of 113 translation articles in the periodical Slovo a slovesnost were described. 41 of them include the theme of translation theory, 33 of translation criticism and 45 of machine translation. This paper offers complete overview of translation articles published on the pages of one of the most important Czech linguistic periodical, describes their meaning and together with the theoretical chapters makes a synoptic picture of translation themes that were treated on the Czech territory in years 1948-1989.

Translations of Trivial Literature from German into Czech. For Example the Novels by J.M.Simmel

This diploma thesis deals with with issues occuring in translating trivial literature (formula fiction). Three novels by the Austrian novelist Johannes Mario Simmel are used as empirical material. The first part of the paper focuses on the term trivial literature as well as the person of J. M. Simmel and his work. In the second part, three novels by this author are the subject of translation analysis. The analysis uses criteria of quality assessment defined by the German translation scholar Katharina Reiß in her thesis Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Übersetzungskritik (published in 1971). The analysis shows various aspects contributing to the result of this translation process. They are partly objective, given by context of time period in which they were created, and partly subjective, given by the person of the translator. Georg Büchner's Drama "Woyzeck" in Czech translations

The topic of this thesis is Georg Büchner's fragmentary drama Woyzeck. At the beginning, the work presents the playwright's biography set in the historical context and his work. It continues with the circumstances of Woyzeck's origin, the plot summary, description of the language of the play and problems with edition and decoding the manuscripts. The next part talks about the different concepts of Woyzeck in Czech theatres and what the reactions of the audience and the critics were. The work also briefly deals with Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck, the libretto and the reaction of the Czech audience. The focus of this thesis are the translations into Czech, especially a detailed analysis and comparison of Rudolf Vápeník's and Ludvík Kundera's translations. The analysis is based on Katharina Reiß' translation analysis model. Only Kundera's translation was found to be a functional one, Vápeník's translation is - according to the author of the thesis - obsolete.

Analysis of the Czech translation of Yuri Vynnychuk's collection of short stories Chachacha

This diploma thesis Analysis of the Czech translation of Yuri Vynnychuk's collection of short stories Chachacha is devoted to the analysis of translation solutions of selected linguistic features in two short stories - Chachacha and Kulparkiv, aneb Chachacha 2. The goal of this work is to assess translation methods of Rita Kindlerová, describe its possible positives and negatives. Introductory chapters deal with the biography of Yuri Vynnychuk, his classification in a literal context, general characteristics of his work and consequently the stylistic analysis of two excerpted texts. An integral part of the work is definition of theoretical base for translatological analysis. Main parts of the work are focused on the analysis of translation of specific linguistic features, which are the stylistic dominants of selected texts: stylization of speech, style differentiation, phraseme and selected culture- specific items with an emphasis on proper nouns.

F.Dürrenmatt: Play Strindberg. Czech Reception

The topic of this thesis is Play Strindberg (1969), a play by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, which is an adaptation of Strindberg's drama The Dance of Death (1901). The thesis first discusses the context of the play's origin and the reactions to its first showing. It then goes on to analyze nine Czech theatrical productions of Play Strindberg and also one made by the Czech television. The main part of the thesis presents a detailed criticism of two of the drama's translations (1969 and 1989) based on Katharina Reiß' translation analysis model. Both translations meet the requirements for a functional translation. Curriculum vitas of translators Bohumil Černík (*1924) and Jiří Stach (*1930) are also enclosed.
